Below is a list of items that students will need throughout the year in band. Please make sure you have these items in class by the date specified by the director. Pete's Music, Master Musician and possibly Guitar Center should have these items in stock.
All band students should have the following items in class every day:
Additionally, depending on their instrument, students should have the following:
(Our local music stores have cleaning kits available for purchase that contain all of these items. Various similar items may be found on Amazon.com)
Flute: Cleaning rod and cloth. Q-tips (kept for at-home cleaning).
All clarinets and saxophones: Rico Royal or Vandoren reeds (2.5 or 3 strength), silk cleaning swab, cork grease, neckstrap (sax and bass clarinet only)
Oboes and Bassoons: Medium Soft double reeds (or you can learn to make your own reeds to save on cost), synthetic (plastic) reed, silk cleaning swab, cork grease, neckstrap (bassoon only).
Trumpet, baritone/euphonium, tuba: Cleaning equipment (snake, mouthpiece brush, valve brush), valve oil, and tuning slide grease. Our local music stores have cleaning kits available for purchase that contain all of these items.
Trombone: Cleaning equipment (snake and mouthpiece brush), tuning slide grease, and slide oil or cream. Our local music stores have cleaning kits available for purchase that contain most of these items.
Bass Guitar: Lint-free cloth, amplifier (optional for practice at home, not needed at school), extra strings (I recommend Ernie Ball Extra Slinky Flatwound), guitar cable, and a guitar strap.
Percussion: SD1 drumsticks (regular size), medium yarn mallets (I recommend Mike Balter BB2 medium blue yarn mallets), medium rubber mallets (I recommend Vic Firth M5 mallets), a 6” or larger practice pad, and a stick bag (to safely store sticks and mallets in). All other mallets and beaters will be provided. A bell kit will be needed for keyboard practice at home. If you rent from the school or an outside source, some of these items may be provided as part of the rental.
All band students should have the following items in class every day:
- Director provided:
- Method book: Essential Elements, Sound Innovations, and Tone Builders method books
- Music folder with music
- All performance sheet music
- Student provided (students are graded daily on their possession of these items):
- Instrument and all necessary playing equipment (mouthpiece, reeds, neck strap, etc. [see below])
- Pencil (absolutely no pens or markers)
- Tuner and metronome. I highly recommend the Tonal Energy app for all tuning and metronome needs. It costs a few dollars, but it is well worth the purchase. For a non-smartphone option I recommend the Korg TM-60. It is a tuner/metronome combo, and it’s an excellent product. (Note: You will want to purchase a tuning clip with it if you go with this option.) Link to purchase.
- Suggested but not required: music stand for home practice
